The international English language testing system (IELTS) is the world's most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration, with over 3 million test takers every year. IELTS is jointly managed by the British Council, Cambridge English Language Assessment and IDP Education, Australia.
There are two versions of the test:
Academic version is for students wishing to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels in an English medium environment.
General Training version is for people who wish to migrate to an English speaking country.
The Test:
There are four modules:
Listening –
Test duration is 40 minutes in total; 30 minutes to listen to an audio file, plus 10 minutes for transferring answers to the answer sheet. The audio is heard once only. There are 40 questions divided into 4 parts with 10 questions per section.
Kind of audio:
Part 1: A conversation between 2 people about a general topic with a transactional purpose.
Part 2: A monologue or prompted monologue on a general topic with a transactional purpose.
Part 3: A conversation between 2 or 3 people in an academic context.
Part 4: A monologue in an academic context.
Type of questions:
Reading –
Test duration is 60 minutes in total. There is no extra time for transferring answers to the answer sheet. There are 40 questions divided into 3 sections.
Kind of Text:
Academic-
3 texts, taken from authentic sources, on academic topics but written for non-specialist audience.
General Training-
Section 1: 2 or 3 short texts or several shorter ones (e.g. advertisements)
Section 2: 2 texts related to the workplace
Section 3: 1 long discursive text.
Type of questions:
Writing –
Test duration is 60 minutes. There are 2 tasks to attempt. The format is the same for both the Academic and General Training versions of the test, but the task types are different.
Type of tasks:
Academic-
Task 1: Description of a table, chart, graph or diagram in minimum 150 words.
Task 2: An essay in response to an argument or problem in minimum 250 words.
General Training:
Task 1: Writing a letter in response to a given situation (150 words min).
Task 2: An essay in response to an argument or problem in minimum 250 words.
Speaking –
Test duration is approximately 11-14 minutes. This is a three part face-to-face oral interview with an examiner. The interview is recorded.
The Speaking test has three parts:
Part 1: Introduction and general questions (4 - 5 mins)
Part 2: Individual long turn (3 - 4 mins)
Part 3: Two way discussion (4 - 5 mins)
IELTS Scores –
In IELTS, a 9-band scoring system is used to measure and report scores in a consistent manner. Candidates are given a score from 1 to 9 for each part of the test - Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The average of all the band scores of each skill gives the overall band score.
